Archaeological House, Petriplatz — Berlin-Mitte

Two cubic volumes, one stepped down in front of the other, seen from the corner. Four rendered planes, one small window with a rail across it, a thin metal coping along every roof edge — and the sky as a fifth plane, doing the same work as the walls.

The colour is not the building’s. It is shifted afterwards — a decision, not a record. What the camera found was the geometry and the light crossing it; what I changed was the temperature at which you read them.

Underneath this building lie the excavated remains that give it its name; above ground it gives almost nothing away. Four rendered planes, one small window with a rail across it, joints hard enough to draw with. A surface that covers an excavation is already halfway to an abstraction — which is the argument for photographing it frontally.

Photographed on 11 April 2026 at Petriplatz. The building is the Archaeological House, completed in 2024 to a design by Florian Nagler Architekten and built over the excavated foundations of the medieval Latin school and the Petrikirche — the oldest ground in the city.
