Visby — Gotland II
The shadow on this wall is a copy of the roof above it. Same pitch, same row of half-round tiles along the upper edge — one storey lower, and completely flat.
Between the two gables there is nothing but render. No window, no door, no indication of what stands behind it. The wall is a plane that happens to be in the way, and once a day the roof opposite draws on it.
The colour is a decision, and it is not applied evenly. The gable at the left has been moved into ochre and the sky into a turquoise that Gotland does not hand out in June. The white between them was left where the camera found it — a neutral ground against which the two changed planes can be read. Below, a plinth of dark violet closes the picture off; at the right a thin vertical shadow interrupts the one long horizontal.
This is the lightest work in the series, and the only one in which most of the surface carries no colour decision at all. That is the point of it: the two edges do the work, and the middle stays quiet.
Visby, on the island of Gotland — the second work made in that town. Part of Fremde Fassaden, an ongoing series of colour-shifted façades made in Berlin, with detours to Duisburg, Visby and Douglas. See Visby — Gotland I and the other works made beyond Berlin.
