Berlin is the raw material of this series, and most of it is the unglamorous kind: housing blocks from the 1960s to the 1980s, rendered walls, roller shutters, the occasional public building that has been repainted three times since it was finished. Nobody photographs these buildings. That is why they are worth looking at for a long time.

The pictures are made from the pavement, head-on, at eye level, with no people and no sky drama. What changes afterwards is the colour — shifted until the wall stops being a wall and becomes a plane. The building is the material, not the subject. How the method works is explained in a separate note; the short version is that a painter is holding the camera.

Places

The buildings behind the pictures

Seven of the eleven were made in Kreuzberg, most within walking distance of one another; one block stands opposite my window and has become a series of its own. Three come from Berlin-Mitte — the Komische Oper and two buildings at Petriplatz, where the city’s oldest ground carries some of its newest walls. One is a yellow wall in Neukölln that I passed for a year before I photographed it.

None of these are the famous buildings. The Mäusebunker, St. Agnes and the other brutalist landmarks of Berlin appear in the Journal, seen from the street; the façades in this series are the ones between them. By district: Kreuzberg · Berlin-Mitte · beyond Berlin (Duisburg, Visby, Douglas).
